hmm...that's what i thought too..when i first came across Nana.
I thought its another usual shoujo type of story. was about to 'bypass' it when this girl insists that its a MUST READ.

After reading the first few books, the story kind of grows on you...and it becomes better & better towards the recent book, vol 10 onwards!
i recommend reading the 2nd volume onwards, that's when the story actually starts.

There's certain parts of the story that is really heart wrenching! trust me!!
so far after reading so many shoujo stories, i thought Nana stands out for its bitter love yet beautiful story. Also thought this is not for the 'underage' and faint hearted, cos the themes involved are quite adult - drugs, depression - u name it u hv it.

So many reasons, very hard for me to list down.

I love Nana.
I've been reading it for a while.
And for me the best couples are :
Yasu & Mui.
Shin & Reira.
Nana & Ren.
Hachi & Nobu.
Takumi & Asami [the porn star].
Fake Misato & ... I don't know.
;_;

How does the manga compare to the anime version? Just curious since I haven't read the manga at all, but I'm keeping up with the anime as it's being released...so all I've really gathered was from a friend telling me that it seems to be running slower in the anime (as it that they are spreading out the storyline over more episodes than it took in the manga chapters).

Very very similar. The ending is cut off though, but they will most likely make a 2nd when Nana the manga ends. It's really good! They don't drag. Nana doesn't go too fast, either, though you'd feel it because the pacing is so tight and she makes everything seem so vitally important (and in a way, it is, but that's because she shows a lot of tender moments too).

I love Nana. I LOVE LOVE NANA. Josei/shoujo, whatever. Neither has ever been this good. Yazawa-sensei, I tip my hat off to you for your masterful art. Takes a bit of getting use to, but when you do, you notice all the good technical stuff. Paneling, pacing, no overuse of screentones. Heavy black to fit somber mood, lighter to fit happier mood. You don't realize how awesome the art is until you think about it because you are so immersed in the story BECAUSE of the art. So much emotion! And such great fashion sense!!

Her style really fits her manga. Unique. A great talent. I hope she makes manga forever more. And I hope Nana doesn't end too sad either...Please don't make another bittersweet ending like ParaKiss (I already think she did, though...)

I love NANA. I don't know why but I think the mangaka changed the end of the history because of the fans ... :/

well, i'm not going to say the end, but is very normal. ;/

I'm probably sound like a manga nerd here, but:
NANA'S BEEN FINISHED ALREADY?!
I thought it went on hiatus and is nowhere to be tracked on the net (after chapter 89, I mean)
Is it finished but not scanned&translated&released or finished&scanned&translated&released and it's just me who hasn't found it? Sad((((((((

haha, I think I said "realistic" because, in chicken, the characters do not find their true love for 16 years and live happily ever after hanging the first week, they meet
